In short

  • Inside the glass is the easy year-round choice; Lumalyn's IP44 curtain also suits sheltered outdoor spots, but not open rain.
  • Measure the window trim: the 6 ft 7 in (2 m) curtain suits wide windows and patio doors, while narrow windows need a different plan.
  • Hang close to the glass to cut reflections, keep the USB plug off wet sills, and test scrolling text from the street.

A lit window is the friendliest thing on a dark street. Hang a curtain of tiny LEDs against the glass and it becomes a small show for everyone walking past, and a soft glow for everyone inside. Better still, window curtain lights don't have to come down after the holidays: the same curtain can sparkle warm white in January, show red hearts in February and turn orange in October.

This guide covers year-round window use: inside vs. outside the glass, glare and reflections, sizing to the frame, working around blinds and drapes, and condensation. Our pick is the Lumalyn Smart Animated Christmas Balcony Lights, a 400-pixel curtain whose app and DIY mode make it much more than a Christmas decoration. A window display for every season

A plain curtain glows in one or two looks. A pixel curtain, where each LED is controlled on its own, can change its whole personality from an app. With Lumalyn's 100+ scenes, 16 million colors and a DIY mode for your own drawings and scrolling text, here's what a year in the window could look like:

When Window idea
January and February Slow warm sparkle; red and pink hearts for Valentine's Day
Spring Soft pastel color washes; a scrolling "Welcome spring"
Summer Red, white and blue for the Fourth of July; ambient scenes on long evenings
Game days and birthdays Team colors; a name or "Happy birthday" in scrolling text
October Orange and purple with a drawn pumpkin or ghost (see /halloween-curtain-lights/)
December Snow, winter and festive message scenes built into the app

Inside or outside the glass?

For most homes, inside wins.

Inside the glass Outside the glass
Weather Fully protected Needs a sheltered spot under an overhang
Seen from the street Yes, through the glass The most direct view
Glow inside the room Yes Very little
Power Short USB run to an indoor outlet Plug must be routed and kept dry
Mounting Curtain rod, tension rod or hooks on the frame Railing, eaves or balcony ceiling

The weather row decides it. Lumalyn rates its curtain IP44. In the IP code, that second 4 means protection against water splashing from any direction, a step below the water-jet protection of IPX5 or IP65. So the set is fine indoors and on sheltered balconies, but it isn't made for open rain, and the USB plug must stay dry. If you're set on lighting the outside, read /outdoor-curtain-lights/ first.

Glare and reflections: making the glass work for you

At night, a lit room turns a window into a mirror, and a curtain of LEDs can show up twice: once for real and once reflected. A few habits fix most of it:

  • Hang close to the glass. The nearer the curtain is to the pane, the closer its reflection sits to the real LEDs, so the doubling is much less noticeable.
  • Dim the room. Turn off overhead lights so people outside see the curtain rather than your living room, and you see less reflection from inside.
  • Lower the brightness for indoor viewing. A pixel curtain at full brightness a few feet from the sofa can be dazzling. Lumalyn lists adjustable brightness, so turn it down in the evening.
  • Test text from outside. A light curtain is visible from both sides, but text reads correctly from only one. Lumalyn doesn't list a mirror setting, so scroll a test word and look from the sidewalk before you rely on messages. Symmetrical pictures look fine either way.

Double-glazed windows can show a faint second reflection. That's ordinary glass behavior, not a fault in the lights.

Sizing window curtain lights to the frame

Measure across the outside edges of the window trim for width, and from your top support down to the sill (or floor) for height. Lumalyn's curtain comes in two square sizes, both with 400 LEDs:

Your window Rough width Best fit
Large picture window or wide double window 6–7 ft (1.8–2.1 m) 6 ft 7 in (2 m)
Sliding patio door often about 6 ft (1.8 m) 6 ft 7 in (2 m), hung floor-length
Window wall or two windows side by side 9–10 ft (2.7–3 m) 9 ft 10 in (3 m)
Single narrow window under 5 ft (1.5 m) The set will be wider than the window; light the wall around it or see /curtain-fairy-lights/

Height is the other half. Each curtain is as tall as it is wide, so on a window shorter than the curtain, the strands will run past the sill. Let them hang toward the floor if you can. Bunching or folding a pixel curtain distorts its pictures and text, because each LED has a fixed spot in the grid. The 2 m size also gives the sharper image, at about 100 LEDs/m² versus about 44 on the 3 m set. More measuring help is in the /curtain-lights-size-guide/.

Working with blinds and drapes

  • Between the glass and blinds. Mount the curtain on a tension rod inside the window recess or on hooks along the top of the frame, then lower the blinds behind it. From outside, the closed blinds become a clean backdrop; inside, they block the glow at bedtime. Check that the blinds still move freely.
  • Behind sheer curtains. Hang the lights against the glass with the sheers in front. Inside you get a soft, diffused glow, and the street still sees the full picture.
  • With heavy drapes. Use the inner track of a double rod or a separate rod so the drapes still close over the lights. It's a cozy combination for a bedroom; see /curtain-lights-for-bedroom/.

Keep the USB controller and charger where air can circulate, not wedged against a radiator or buried in fabric.

Condensation, cold glass and wet sills

Most condensation in a home forms when warm, moist air meets a cool surface, and it's especially noticeable in winter when heating meets cold glass, above all single glazing. The result is beads of water on the pane and puddles on the sill, often first thing in the morning.

  • Don't let the strands rest against wet glass; a small gap helps.
  • Keep the USB controller, plug and charger off the sill, where water collects. Lumalyn says the USB plug must stay dry, and a phone charger isn't built for damp sills at all.
  • If condensation is heavy, better ventilation or a dehumidifier helps the room as well as the lights.

Power and control at the window

The curtain runs on 5 V USB from any USB charger or power bank, though the adapter isn't included. A charger in a nearby outlet and the cable run neatly along the frame keep things tidy. Control is by Bluetooth app (iOS and Android) or the included remote, from nearby, with no Wi-Fi needed.

The feature that makes a window display effortless is the timer. Lumalyn lists one, so the curtain can switch on in the early evening and off at bedtime every day without anyone touching it. For a deeper look at the app, see /smart-curtain-lights/.

Our pick for window curtain lights

For a window you'll enjoy all year, the Lumalyn curtain makes a strong case on paper: 400 individually controlled LEDs, 100+ scenes, DIY drawing and text, music sync, a timer and simple USB power. Choose the 6 ft 7 in (2 m) size for most windows and patio doors, and the 9 ft 10 in (3 m) size for a wide window wall.

Buying risk is low. Shipping is free and tracked, with dispatch in 1–3 business days and delivery in about 7–12 business days. Change-of-mind returns are accepted within 30 days with a free return label if the set is unused, complete and in its original packaging (email Lumalyn first). Every set has a 2-year warranty. Lighting more than one window? Two sets are 10% off and three are 20% off. Import duties may apply depending on your country.

Frequently asked questions

Should curtain lights go inside or outside the window?

Inside, for most homes. The glass protects the lights from weather and they're still visible from the street. Outside only works in a sheltered spot unless the set is rated for rain; Lumalyn's IP44 curtain is for indoor and sheltered outdoor use, not open rain.

How do I stop window lights reflecting in the glass?

Hang the curtain close to the pane so its reflection lines up with the real LEDs, switch off bright room lights, and lower the curtain's brightness when you're watching it from inside.

Can I leave curtain lights in the window all year?

Yes, indoors. Check the cable and plug now and then, keep them off wet sills, and use a timer so the lights only run when you want them. A pixel curtain can change scenes with the seasons.

Will condensation damage window curtain lights?

Keep the strands off wet glass and the USB plug and charger off the sill. Lumalyn's curtain is splash resistant (IP44), but Lumalyn says the USB plug must stay dry.

Can I use curtain lights with blinds?

Yes. Mount the lights on a tension rod or hooks between the glass and the blinds. Lowered blinds then act as a clean backdrop from the street and block the glow at night.
